Fabric stretch is the ability of a material to extend under force and move back towards its original dimensions after the force is removed. It affects garment fit, freedom of movement and the way a printed design looks during use.
What does fabric stretch mean?
Stretch is commonly reported as a percentage of the original length. If a 10 centimetre specimen extends to 12 centimetres, it shows 20 percent stretch under the stated conditions. The figure needs context. The applied force, holding time and test direction should also be recorded.
Fabric stretch is not the same as elongation at break. Working stretch describes extension within the intended use range. Elongation at break measures how far a material extends before failure.
What are 2-way and 4-way stretch?
In textile trade, 2-way stretch usually means extension along one axis, often across the fabric width. Four-way stretch means the material extends both across and along its length. Terminology varies between suppliers, so an order should not rely on the label alone.

What determines fabric stretch?

Which stretch direction does a product need?

Pattern-piece placement also matters. If the required stretch direction is placed incorrectly, the garment can restrict movement or lose its intended form even when the fabric itself is suitable.
Does stretch affect a printed design?
Motifs widen as the fabric extends. The change is easy to notice in large geometric shapes. It may be less obvious in small dense prints, although colour lightening or the base fabric showing through still needs attention.
Review the printed sample under tension similar to the finished product, not only while it lies flat. Approving print scale and fabric movement together reduces surprises in production.
