What is woven fabric?

Woven fabric is made by interlacing lengthwise warp yarns with crosswise weft yarns in a defined weave. Plain, twill and satin are basic weave families. Fibre, yarn, density and finishing can create very different results within each family.

What is knitted fabric?

There is no universal winner. Tensile, tear, abrasion, pilling and seam performance depend on fibre, yarn, density, weight and use. Verify the required durability with end-use tests.

How do drape and handle differ?

Knits often conform more readily to the body, while dense wovens can hold a defined form. Yet a lightweight viscose woven may drape more than a heavy interlock. Weight and finishing matter as much as the structure name.

Does structure alone determine breathability?

No. Yarn spacing affects air flow, but fibre, thickness, density, raising and coatings also matter. An open woven can be more permeable than a dense knit. Compare results under the same test conditions.

What changes during cutting and sewing?

Wovens require control of grain, bias and fraying. Knits require seams that preserve stretch, suitable needles, differential feeding and curl control. Confirm pattern allowance, stabilisation and sewing settings through a production sample.

Why can dimensional change differ?

Released yarn tension, fibre response to moisture and finishing can alter dimensions. Knit loops may relax, while warp and weft tensions may produce directional change in wovens. Report length and width separately.

Should woven or knitted fabric be used for digital printing?

The decision depends on fibre and print chemistry as well as construction. Flat, stable surfaces can simplify fine-detail control. Stretch knits require careful feeding, width control and fixation. Match the method to polyester, cellulosic or protein fibres.

Which structure suits each application?

  • Structured shirts and trousers: suitable woven constructions may be preferred.
  • Movement and comfort: knits with verified stretch and recovery may work well.
  • Fluid dresses and scarves: lightweight wovens or suitable knits can be selected for the target appearance.
