What Is Fabric Air Permeability? Breathability Guide

Fabric air permeability is the rate at which air passes through a material under a specified pressure difference. It is often discussed as "breathability", but the terms do not measure the same property. Clothing comfort can involve air flow, water-vapour transfer, thermal resistance and garment construction.

What is fabric air permeability?

Air permeability is a physical measurement of air flow through fabric under controlled conditions. In methods such as ASTM D737, a defined pressure difference is applied across the specimen and the rate of air flow is measured.

A result needs the test area, pressure difference, instrument and reporting unit. Figures obtained with different methods should not be compared without accounting for those conditions.

Are breathability and air permeability the same?

No. Breathability is a broad comfort term in everyday use. Air permeability measures air flow. Water-vapour resistance describes resistance to the passage of moisture vapour. ISO 11092 defines methods for measuring thermal and water-vapour resistance of textiles and similar materials under steady-state conditions.

A material can allow substantial air flow without providing the moisture or thermal performance required by a product. Ask for relevant test results instead of relying on a general "breathable" description.

How does construction affect air flow?

Spaces between yarns, weave density, knit-loop openness and thickness create the paths available to air. Open constructions usually allow more flow. Dense structures, coatings and finishes that flatten the surface can reduce it.

Does fabric weight determine air permeability?

No. A lightweight fabric may have limited air flow because its construction is dense. A heavier fabric can be bulky yet relatively open. Weight, thickness and construction should be reviewed together.

Does fibre type determine breathability?

Fibre moisture behaviour contributes to comfort, but fibre content alone does not determine air permeability. Fabrics made from the same fibre can produce different results because of yarn, construction and finishing. Review the physical structure as well as the fibre name.

Can printing and finishing change the result?

Print paste, resin, coating, lamination and calendaring can narrow or block air paths. The effect depends on the formulation and amount applied. A test on unfinished fabric may not represent the final printed product.

Use a specimen that has received the intended printing and finishing process. Recording results before and after treatment also helps identify where a change occurred.

How should air permeability be selected for a product?

Summer shirts, dresses and sportswear may benefit from greater air movement. Wind-resistant outerwear, bags and protective layers may need lower permeability. Curtains, bedding and upholstery each have different performance requirements.

The highest value is not automatically the best. The useful target is the range suited to the product and its conditions of use.

How can samples be compared?

  1. Prepare specimens of the same size and direction.
  2. Use samples with the same finish and laundering history.
  3. Keep the method, pressure difference and unit consistent.
  4. Take several measurements from different areas.
  5. Review the result with water-vapour and thermal requirements.

Blowing through fabric or holding it to light gives only a rough impression. Commercial acceptance needs a defined test. The fabric sample guide covers physical approval before production.

Does an air-permeable fabric always feel cool?

No. Air flow affects comfort, but thermal resistance, moisture, garment construction and environmental conditions also change how warm it feels.

Is thin fabric always more breathable?

No. A thin dense fabric can pass less air than a thicker material with a more open construction.

Does printing reduce air permeability?

It can. The effect depends on print paste, application amount, coatings and finishing. Test the final finished sample.
