What Is Sublimation Printing? Which Fabrics Is It Suitable For?
Sublimation printing uses heat to move disperse dye into polyester fibres. It performs best on white or light-coloured fabrics made from polyester or containing a high polyester percentage.
Fibre percentage, base colour, finish, elastane content and heat resistance should be checked before production. A fabric described only as synthetic does not automatically guarantee a suitable result.
What is sublimation printing?
Heat changes the dye into a gas that enters the polyester structure. As the fabric cools, the colour remains within the fibre rather than forming a heavy binder layer on the surface.

Which fabrics are suitable for sublimation?

Can sublimation be used on cotton?
Standard sublimation does not permanently bond to cotton. Coatings and transfer films may hold an image on the surface, but they do not provide the same fibre-level structure or handle as polyester sublimation.
How does fabric base colour affect sublimation?
Sublimation dyes are transparent and do not provide an opaque white layer. The base colour therefore combines optically with the printed colours. White offers the broadest colour range.
Does sublimation change fabric hand feel?
Because the dye enters polyester, it does not normally leave a noticeable surface film. The existing finish and the applied heat can still influence the final handle.
What determines colour vibrancy?
Polyester percentage, fabric whiteness, colour profile, paper, ink load, temperature and dwell time work together. Incorrect heat can cause weak colour, shifting or loss of detail.
