What Is a Repeat Pattern in Textiles, and How Does It Work?

A repeat pattern is a fabric design that appears continuous, formed by tiling a single motif or composition side by side and top to bottom so its edges align seamlessly. When edges don't align correctly, a visible "seam line" appears in the pattern. That is what makes repeat design one of the most technically critical steps in digital printing.

What does repeat scale mean?

Repeat scale refers to how much physical space (in centimeters) a single motif occupies; a small-scale repeat means a tiny pattern that tiles frequently, while a large-scale repeat means a more prominent, less frequently repeating motif. The same pattern can be printed at different repeat scales, and the look can change completely.

How does repeat scale affect your order?

When a large-scale repeat is chosen, only part of the motif may appear on a product (a cushion cover, for example); a small-scale repeat shows the pattern in full regardless of product size. That's why choosing the right repeat scale for the product type directly affects the visual result.

Why do some patterns look more "seamless"?

A well-designed repeat is achieved by aligning color/line transitions at the motif's edges so they're imperceptible to the eye. That requires careful seamless-tiling work during the design stage.
