What Is Digitally Printed Fabric? A Design and Production Guide

Digitally printed fabric is produced by transferring artwork from a digital file onto a textile surface with a printing system and colourant suited to the fabric. The result depends not only on the design, but also on fibre content, fabric construction, pretreatment, printing method, fixation and finishing.

The phrase "printed patterned fabric" is broader. It describes fabric carrying a motif, but does not identify how that motif was applied. A patterned fabric may be made with digital printing or with another textile printing process.

What is digitally printed fabric?

Digitally printed fabric is fabric for which colour and motif data are sent from a digital artwork file to the printing system. Instead of preparing a separate physical screen or engraved printing form for the design, the digital file directs image placement during printing.

"Digitally printed" does not describe the fibre or fabric construction. Cotton, viscose, polyester, silk and blended fabrics can all be digitally printed, but they do not use the same ink chemistry, pretreatment or fixation. See our guide to digital textile printing methods for the technical distinctions.

Are printed patterned fabric and digitally printed fabric the same?

Printed patterned fabric is a general description for a textile carrying a repeat motif or a placement image. The phrase does not specify the production method. Digitally printed fabric is more precise because it states that the design was applied through a digitally controlled printing process.

For a buyer, the important question is not simply whether the fabric has a pattern. The printing method, intended product, colour target, handle, performance and care requirements should be considered together.

How is digitally printed fabric produced?

The production route changes with the fabric and print chemistry, but a project generally passes through these checks:

  1. The artwork file is prepared. Scale, repeat, resolution and colour information are checked. Our fabric printing artwork guide explains the file requirements.
  2. The fabric and printing method are matched. Fibre content, surface, weight, width and end use are considered.
  3. Required pretreatment is applied. The treatment depends on the ink system and fabric. Its role is to control how the ink behaves under the selected production conditions.
  4. Printing, fixation and finishing are completed. Depending on the system, colour fixation may require heat, steam or other process steps. Washing is also part of some production routes.
  5. Sampling and quality checks are completed. Colour, design scale, repeat joins, surface appearance and end-use performance criteria are reviewed.

For a closer look at the sequence, read our custom pattern printing process.

Which fabrics can be digitally pattern printed?

Fabric selection for digital printing depends on the relationship between fibre and printing system. Sublimation or disperse systems may be considered for polyester, reactive or pigment options for cellulosic fibres, and acid printing systems for fibres such as silk and polyamide, depending on project requirements.

Fibre name alone is not enough. Woven or knitted construction, surface evenness, absorbency, pretreatment, colour target and end use also affect the result. Use our fibre-by-fibre digital printing guide when comparing options.

What determines digital print quality on fabric?

Quality in digitally printed fabric covers more than artwork resolution. The following factors work together:

  • Fibre content and fabric construction
  • Surface cleanliness, evenness and required pretreatment
  • Physical design scale and repeat joins
  • Compatibility between the print system, colourant and fabric
  • Fixation, washing and finishing conditions
  • Comparison between the approved sample and production output

For colour, repeat continuity, surface faults and inspection points, see our quality control guide for digitally printed fabrics.

Where is digitally printed fabric used?

Digitally printed fabrics can be used in fashion collections, scarves and accessories, home textiles, decorative products, sampling and brand-specific textile projects. The fabric decision affects drape, handle, durability, cutting behaviour and care requirements.

The same artwork may therefore look and perform differently on different fabrics. A light, fluid surface selected for a scarf is not equivalent to the structure required for upholstery or a bag.

What should be confirmed before ordering?

Prepare the following information before requesting a quotation or sample:

  • The product application and required fabric character
  • Preferred fibre, weight and fabric width
  • Physical artwork scale and repeat type
  • Colour reference and approval method
  • Sampling and production approval stages
  • Order quantity, delivery point and project schedule

Before approving production, read why a physical reference matters in our fabric sample guide.

Should you choose a ready-made or custom design?

A ready-made design can shorten collection development and make it easier to compare available fabric options. A custom design allows a brand to carry its own visual language, scale and colour decisions into production.

For custom artwork, the ordering party should hold the relevant printing and usage rights. The file should also be supplied at the correct scale for technical review. Fabric and artwork need to be assessed together because an on-screen preview cannot define the final production result on its own.

How do you choose the right digitally printed fabric?

Define the final product first, then select the fabric structure and compatible printing system. Check the artwork at physical scale, review a representative sample and document the production criteria. This treats fabric and design as one product decision rather than two separate choices.

You can review available fabrics or submit print-ready artwork for a project assessment.

Frequently asked questions about digitally printed fabric

Can digitally printed fabric be washed?

Yes, but the correct care method depends on fibre content, printing system, fixation and finishing. Follow the care instructions supplied for the specific fabric.

Can every fabric be digitally printed?

Not every fabric suits the same digital printing system. Fibre content, surface construction, pretreatment and end use must be assessed before selecting the method.

Can I order printed fabric with my own design?

You can request custom printing with a technically suitable file for which you hold the relevant printing and usage rights. Artwork, fabric and sample checks should be completed before production.
